Taweelah, Abu Dhabi
909,200 m³/day (200 MIGD)
The Al Taweelah IWP is, at design capacity, the largest seawater reverse osmosis plant in operation, producing up to 909,200 m³/day for Abu Dhabi under a 30-year agreement with EWEC. Construction was phased: the first block reached operations in mid-2022 and full commercial operation was certified in March 2024.
Hassyan complex, Dubai (≈55 km southwest of Dubai Creek)
818,000 m³/day (180 MIGD)
Hassyan is DEWA’s first independent water producer (IWP) project and is designed to become the world’s largest solar-powered desalination plant, producing 818,000 m³/day when fully ramped up in 2027. Financial close was reached in April 2024, with operations expected to start in 2026.
Jubail, Eastern Province
600,000 m³/day
Jubail 3A is the first large-scale desalination plant in Saudi Arabia to integrate solar PV directly with the desalination facility. The 600,000 m³/day SWRO plant entered full commercial operation in 2023 after achieving a reported record of under 2.8 kWh/m³ of desalinated water using Arabian Gulf seawater.
Al-Qunfudhah Governorate, Makkah Region (≈300 km south of Mecca)
300,000 m³/day
Ras Mohaisen is a 300,000 m³/day SWRO project on the Red Sea coast that will serve the Makkah and Al-Bahah regions. The developer consortium — ACWA Power, Hajj Abdullah Ali Reza & Co., and AlKifah Holding — reached financial close in December 2025, with initial production planned for 2028 and full capacity in 2030.
Yanbu, west coast
300,000 m³/day (300 MLD)
A greenfield 300 MLD seawater reverse osmosis plant on Saudi Arabia’s west coast. VA Tech WABAG received the letter of award in July 2025 for the design, supply, construction, and commissioning of the facility for the Saudi Water Authority.
Nemmeli, Chengalpattu district (greater Chennai, Tamil Nadu)
150,000 m³/day (150 MLD)
Chennai’s third desalination plant, inaugurated in February 2024, adds 150 million litres per day of SWRO capacity to supply roughly 900,000 residents across the southern part of the metropolitan area. The project was supported by the AMRUT scheme and KfW development financing.
Dana Point, South Orange County, California
≈ 20,000 m³/day (5 MGD)
A small-to-mid-size ocean desalination project in Dana Point designed around the California Ocean Plan’s preferred environmental approach: fully submerged subsurface slant wells for intake and blended brine discharge through an existing outfall. The Phase 1 design-build-operate contract was awarded in October 2024, with the facility scheduled to come online in 2029.
