Conduit Fill Calculator

Check electrical conduit fill against the permitted percentage and find the smallest standard conduit that accepts the conductors.

What this calculator does

Conduit fill limits exist so cables can still be pulled. This calculator totals the conductor area, compares it with the permitted percentage for that number of conductors, and reports the smallest standard conduit that would accept them.

How to use it

  1. Enter how many conductors share the raceway.
  2. Select the conductor cross-section from the AWG table.
  3. Select the conduit trade size whose internal area you are using.
  4. Check the fill percentage against the NEC Chapter 9 limit for that conductor count.

Governing formula

Governing Formula
fill% = (n × A_conductor) / A_conduit × 100

Where:

  • n = Number of conductors in the raceway [–]
  • A_c = Area of one conductor [mm²]
  • A_p = Internal area of the conduit [mm²]

Worked example — Four #8 conductors in 1" EMT

The figures below were produced by running this page's own engine with the example inputs (Conductors in the raceway, Conductor size, Conduit internal area). If the calculator returns something different for the same numbers, that is a bug, not a rounding difference.

Expected results for the worked example
Total conductor area94.44 mm²
Conduit fill16.96 %
Permitted fill40 %
Smallest compliant internal area344 mm²
AssessmentFill 17.0% is within the 40% NEC Chapter 9 limit.
  1. Four conductors means the 40 % fill limit applies.
  2. Four #8 conductors total 94.4 mm²; 1" EMT has about 557 mm² of internal area.
  3. If the fill exceeds 40 %, step up to the next trade size or split the run.

Assumptions & limitations

Engineering calculation. Conductor area is summed and compared with the conduit fill percentages in NEC Chapter 9. Values are per single raceway run.

  • Fill limits of 53 % / 31 % / 40 % apply to one conductor, two conductors and three or more respectively; other conduit materials and installations use different rules.
  • Conductor areas are for insulated conductors only — bare equipment grounding conductors must be counted separately.
  • Ampacity derating for more than three current-carrying conductors is a separate check that this tool does not perform.

This tool supports professional engineering work; it does not replace a sealed design. Confirm every result against the applicable standard and a licensed engineer before it is built.
