UV Disinfection Sizing Calculator
The required UV power follows from an identity rather than a supplier curve — 1 mJ/cm² over 1 m³/h is 1 W — so that part can be exact. The dose you supply is the governing figure, and it is not universal: it depends on the target organism and on the water it has to treat, so it comes from your disinfection reference and not from a default here. Give a module power and the reactor count is sized on the duty power left once your out-of-service allowance is taken off it.
Design parameters
Flow and dose are required and are enough to state the required power. The module power, the out-of-service allowance and the availability are what turn that into a reactor count and an energy figure.
Basis and limits
- The required power is ideal arithmetic for the dose you supplied. It is not the validated reactor power: real delivery is reduced by short-circuiting, lamp ageing, quartz sleeve transparency, fouling and the dose-rate dependence of the organism.
- A reactor count sized without an out-of-service allowance carries no standby and will not pass the flow with a module down. Supply the allowance and the count is sized on the duty power.
- A dose quoted for clear water applied to a given transmittance is not the same dose. The dose you supply must already be the dose for your water.
- UV is not a chemical disinfectant and has no CT value. A dose and a CT do not substitute for each other.
