Hybrid RO + Thermal

Combining SWRO with a thermal stage, usually to treat the RO concentrate thermally. EngiMetric models the RO half of this arrangement only.

Engineering maturity: Established Commercial status: Commercial

Overview

Combining SWRO with a thermal stage, usually to treat the RO concentrate thermally. EngiMetric models the RO half of this arrangement only.

How it works

Separation mechanism and feed window. Combines two processes, so feed management must satisfy both.

What the process produces. Product from both halves, often blended to a common specification.

Energy. Mixed. SWRO contributes electrical demand; the thermal stage contributes heat.

Process sequence

Where this technology normally sits in a treatment train. The steps either side of it are documented in the Library as separate entries.

  1. SWRO
  2. RO concentrate
  3. MED or MSF on concentrate
  4. Blended product or separate streams

Typical applications

  • Gulf-coastal plants pairing SWRO with MED
  • Improving utilisation of a waste-heat source
  • Reducing volume of a high-salinity concentrate

Main equipment

  • Full SWRO train
  • Thermal train
  • Concentrate transfer and blending

Key design parameters

The parameters an engineer actually sets, and why each one drives the design. EngiMetric does not assume any of them.

Parameter Why it matters
Split between RO and thermal product Determines the economics of the combination.
RO concentrate flow and TDS The thermal stage feed; EngiMetric derives the TDS by salt conservation.
Available waste heat Determines whether the thermal stage is viable at all.

Advantages

  • Better overall use of a waste-heat source.
  • Concentrate volume reduction.

Limitations

  • Two disciplines to operate.
  • Economics depend heavily on the heat source.

Engineering considerations

  • EngiMetric quantifies the RO side and the concentrate handed to the thermal side. It does not quantify the thermal side.

Status and EngiMetric support

Industry maturity and commercial status describe the technology itself. EngiMetric support and quantitative modeling describe what this platform does with it — and those two are read from the engineering registry at build time, so they cannot drift from the code.

Engineering maturity
Established How established the technology is in the industry. Not an EngiMetric claim.
Commercial status
Commercial Where the technology sits in the market. Not an EngiMetric claim.
EngiMetric support
Information only No execution-registry entry exists, so no support is claimed.
Design engine
No Whether the Plant Designer can carry this as a configured process step.
Quantitative modeling
Partial No engine exists, so EngiMetric states no figure for this technology.
