Small & Modular Systems S&M

Overview

Packaging and deployment architectures — containerised, skid-mounted, mobile and remote. The treatment process is unchanged; the enclosure and the application are what differ.

This entry describes an application and packaging architecture. The treatment process inside it is documented separately — see the related technologies below. Nothing on this page states a standard capacity, because capacity follows from the design basis rather than from the packaging.

How it works

Separation mechanism and feed window. Whatever the contained process requires. Packaging adds no pretreatment capability and does not widen the feed window.

What the process produces. Whatever the contained process delivers. EngiMetric does not publish a standard capacity for any S&M configuration, because capacity follows from the design basis.

Energy. Whatever the contained process requires, plus parasitics. A container is not an energy solution.

Process sequence

Where this technology normally sits in a treatment train. The steps either side of it are documented in the Library as separate entries.

  1. Treatment process (usually RO, sometimes RO + pretreatment)
  2. Skid or container integration
  3. Deployment at the application site
  4. Local commissioning and monitoring

Typical applications

  • Rural and community water supply
  • Disaster and emergency response
  • Mining, oil & gas and construction camps
  • Municipal satellite or distributed schemes

Main equipment

  • Skid or ISO container frame
  • The contained treatment process
  • Local control and telemetry
  • Pre-treatment and storage within the footprint

Key design parameters

The parameters an engineer actually sets, and why each one drives the design. EngiMetric does not assume any of them.

Parameter Why it matters
Design flow and recovery Determines the equipment size and therefore the footprint.
Feedwater quality Often the real constraint on an S&M deployment.
Footprint and transport envelope The binding design constraint, not capacity.
Power and logistics Site-specific and frequently the constraint on the whole project.

Advantages

  • Factory-built and commissioned before delivery.
  • Fast to deploy and straightforward to duplicate.
  • Lower initial scale than a central plant.

Limitations

  • Poor fit for very poor feedwater without significant pre-treatment.
  • Per-unit cost can be higher than a central plant at large scale.
  • Certification and regulatory approval is per unit, not per process.

Engineering considerations

  • A skid-mounted RO system is RO. Do not treat packaging as a new treatment technology.
  • EngiMetric states no standard school, clinic or community capacity. Size the design basis, then read the equipment and footprint off the Plant Designer.
  • No EngiMetric capacity figure on this page is a product claim.

Status and EngiMetric support

Industry maturity and commercial status describe the technology itself. EngiMetric support and quantitative modeling describe what this platform does with it — and those two are read from the engineering registry at build time, so they cannot drift from the code.

Engineering maturity
Established How established the technology is in the industry. Not an EngiMetric claim.
Commercial status
Commercial Where the technology sits in the market. Not an EngiMetric claim.
EngiMetric support
Information only No execution-registry entry exists, so no support is claimed.
Design engine
No Whether the Plant Designer can carry this as a configured process step.
Quantitative modeling
Partial No engine exists, so EngiMetric states no figure for this technology.

Design this as a plant

Configure the contained process in the Plant Designer exactly as you would for a central plant; the container changes nothing in the mass balance.

EngiMetric does not model the packaging itself — there is no container, skid or transport model in the Plant Designer. What the designer carries is the contained treatment process, configured exactly as it would be for a central plant.
