Filter Sizing Calculator
Size a conventional rapid-gravity multimedia filter from the design flow, filtration rate, bed depth and media effective size. The surface computes the required filter area, the number of standard units and the media volume as engineering quantities; the estimated head loss is a screening figure that requires engineer review against the specific media and sub-collector data.
Design parameters
Supply the design flow and filtration rate; bed depth and media effective size complete the media volume estimate. The safety factor is optional and defaults to 1.0.
Method and references
- Required filter area
A = Q / vwhere Q is the design flow (m3/h) and v the filtration rate (m3/m2/h). - Number of standard units =
ceil(A / 30 m2), rounded up to ensure installed capacity is not below the required area. - Media volume
V = A × bed depth(m3). - Head loss is presented as an estimated screening value; it must be verified against the specific media, sub-collector and operating schedule (manufacturer / basis-of-design data).
- Typical filtration-rate guidance is reviewed with the engineer; no threshold is imposed by the surface.
